    James founded Klawiter and Associates, Inc. to provide creative, high-quality design for the California business community. The firm’s focus is on corporate design and tenant improvement work encompassing projects in the financial, entertainment, not-for-profit and corporate sectors. The nationally ranked firm has offices in downtown Los Angeles and works on projects throughout the western United States.

    James received his Bachelor of Arts degree from U.C.L.A. in Environmental Design. Prior to starting his own company James was Director of Major Projects at Knoll International, managing the programming, planning and dealer coordination of systems furniture for large corporate facilities.

    James is past president of the International Interior Design Association / Southern California Chapter, three-time Chair of the Southern California IIDA Calibre Design Awards event, past member of the IIDA International Nominating Committee and IIDA International Foundation. He joined the Council for Interior Design Qualification (CIDQ) Board of Directors in 2016 and served as President in 2019.

    This course covers the basics of elevator and escalator operations, including a live presentation on the benefits and pitfalls to avoid during an elevator modernization.

    Elevators and escalators provide tenants and guests with access to the building and its amenities in addition to providing the movement of freight between floors. This course will provide an overview of the features and operation of these transportation systems, as well as a live event recording of the maintenance and modernization of elevators.

    Course Contents

    The Ups and Downs of Escalators: overview of the operation and maintenance of building escalators. Topics covered include safety features, maintenance, and signage.

    Elevators 101: overview of the operation and maintenance of building elevators. Topics covered include elevator controls (destination vs. traditional), types of elevators, machine rooms, and the hydraulic elevator room.

    Maintenance and Modernization of Elevators: overview of the benefits of elevator modernization and tips to avoid the financial and building operation pitfalls that could potentially arise during a modernization. Understand the complexities that occur when going through a modernization and how to address them.

    Course length: One hour and 30 minutes

    Mr. Reynolds has over 32 years of elevator-related experience for virtually all building types, sizes and elevator applications.  He has a wealth of experience as an elevator and escalator mechanic, a supervisor, and, most recently, as a consultant for numerous projects.  John’s responsibilities include general vertical transportation consulting activities for new construction projects and existing properties, specializing in mid-rise and high-rise commercial office, residential and institutional buildings where he performs traffic analyses, prepares contract documents, analyzes bids and executes contract administration.  Mr. Reynolds holds contractors licenses in two states.  He also holds a Qualified Elevator Inspector license (QEI) under the ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators.
